atNorth partners with Vestforbrænding to recycle data centre heat in Denmark

atNorth partners with Vestforbrænding to recycle data centre heat in Denmark

atNorth, a distinguished Nordic colocation specialist, has teamed up with Vestforbrænding, Denmark’s largest waste-to-energy agency, to utilise surplus warmth from their DEN01 information centre. This modern method will channel the by-product of energy-efficient Direct Liquid Cooling into the district heating community, serving over 8,000 houses within the neighborhood of Ballerup, Higher Copenhagen.

The DEN01 website, a major 22.5MW institution, is to grow to be operational by Q1 2026, with the warmth integration commencing in 2028. This initiative ensures a discount within the carbon footprints of each the information centre and Vestforbrænding by minimising the power required for native central heating.

Denmark has lengthy been on the forefront of decarbonisation. In 2022, it set an bold aim to attain internet zero by 2045 and a 110% emissions discount by 2050. The gradual discontinuation of coal in its district heating sector exemplifies Denmark’s help for warmth recycling ventures, dovetailing with round economic system rules.

With vital experience in district heating, Vestforbrænding is on a mission. Their bold 2030 District Heating Plan seeks to switch oil and gasoline boilers with greener options, integrating future power sources reminiscent of surplus information centre warmth.

Vestforbrænding’s CEO, Steen Neuchs Vedel, emphasised the importance of this settlement, illustrating how surplus warmth can successfully attain households. The partnership demonstrates sector coupling between information centres and district heating networks, setting a precedent for others to comply with.

Eyjólfur Magnús Kristinsson, CEO of atNorth, highlighted the growing demand for AI-ready digital infrastructure and the following accountability of scaling sustainably. By fostering warmth reuse collaborations, atNorth goals to minimize environmental impacts and bolster group welfare while aiding shoppers in decarbonising their IT operations.

This collaboration follows earlier engagements, reminiscent of a partnership with Wa3rm, specializing in circularity and bio-based waste stream options. They plan on utilizing extra warmth from atNorth’s DEN02 facility to develop greens. Moreover, atNorth has an settlement with Kesko Company in Finland, recycling waste warmth from FIN02 to warmth close by retail areas.
