Vertiv and Ballard Energy Methods have collaborated to assist the combination of hydrogen-powered gas cell expertise into uninterruptible energy provide (UPS) techniques.

Vertiv has included Ballard’s gas cell energy modules with the Vertiv Liebert EXL S1 UPS, which is able to assist backup energy functions for information centres and important infrastructures “scalable from 200kW to a number of MWs.” The collaboration was showcased in a proof of idea at Vertiv’s Delaware, Ohio facility.

The demonstration utilised two Ballard PowerGen 200 kW gas cell cupboards that powered a totally useful decarbonised backup system. The system additionally included a whole cooling sub-system, energy conditioning gear, and hydrogen storage, built-in with Vertiv HPL Lithium-Ion batteries, the Liebert EXL S1 UPS system, and the Vertiv DynaFlex Vitality Administration Controller.

“Because the hovering enhance in information utilization is driving up energy demand and growth of knowledge centre capability globally, the necessity to successfully handle electrical energy consumption and the carbon footprint of this energy-intensive sector is essential to attain net-zero targets,” mentioned Nicolas Pocard, Vice President Advertising and marketing and Strategic Partnerships at Ballard.

“Ballard and Vertiv’s strategic partnership allows each events to leverage our respective strengths to supply cost-effective, zero Inexperienced Home Fuel (GHG) emission gas cell back-up energy options which are scalable to fulfill information centres rising energy calls for.”

Preliminary checks have demonstrated the profitable operation of zero GHG emission backup energy built-in into an uninterruptible energy structure.

“The unprecedented adoption of synthetic intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) are driving a necessity for eco-friendly energy options for our clients, with a deal with zero-carbon and low-carbon power alternate options,” added Viktor Petik, Vice President of Vertiv Infrastructure Options.
