One of the biggest names in the European cloud hosting space, OVHcloud, has launched its first-ever public cloud ‘Local Zones’ in Brussels, Belgium, and Madrid, Spain. This tactical move is a part of OVHcloud’s determined effort to revolutionize cloud deployment by using an innovative, flexible methodology that makes use of cutting-edge technologies from gridscale, a lately acquired company that’s now a member of the OVHcloud family.

A key milestone for OVHcloud has been reached with the launch of Local Zones in these two major European cities, providing clients with improved access to the company’s public cloud services. These cloud zones would provide lower latency and compliance with local data residency regulations, which can be important for companies in delicate industries like consulting, healthcare, and finance. OVHcloud seeks to provide better performance and regulatory compliance by placing services closer to end customers.

gridscale’s cutting-edge software stack would serve as the technical foundation for this development, enabling quick deployment of cloud capacity across worldwide locations in a matter of weeks. In addition to speeding up OVHcloud’s capacity to satisfy client cloud services demand in new regions, this lean methodology would offer a more affordable option than conventional data center expansions. Using data center colocation facilities, these flexible and adaptable Local Zones would represent an affordable alternative in the market for public cloud computing infrastructure.

Goal: 150 Local Zones Worldwide by 2026

Henrik Hasenkamp, CEO at gridscale
“This is just the beginning of an ambitious roadmap targeting a total of 150 Local Zones by 2026,” said Henrik Hasenkamp, CEO at gridscale, now a member of the OVHcloud family.

The goals of OVHcloud go well beyond Belgium and Spain. According to the company’s ambitious strategy, up to 150 Local Zones might be established worldwide by 2026. The goal of this growth strategy is to establish OVHcloud as a leading player in a number of areas in response to the growing demand for cloud services throughout the globe. The cloud company intends to open up to fifteen Local Zones in 2024 alone. Major cities in Europe and the U.S. that have been suggested as possible locations include Prague, Marseille, Milan, Amsterdam, Zurich, Atlanta, Denver, Chicago, Dallas, New York City, and San José.

This roll-out of cloud infrastructure Local Zones would emphasize the value of data residency for enterprises in addition to OVHcloud’s dedication to provide “an open and trusted cloud environment.” Data processing and storage facilities’ close proximity to data sources or end users could be turning into a competitive advantage, especially for sectors with strict latency and data security regulations. Single-digit millisecond latency is promised by the new Local Zones, which can be advantageous for applications like cloud gaming, ecommerce, content delivery networks (CDNs), and real-time data processing.

Networking, Computation, Block Storage, Local Public IP Addresses

Clients who use these Local Zones will have access to a wide range of public cloud functionalities, such as networking, computation, block storage, and local public IP addresses. As part of an iterative development approach focused at consistently improving the client experience, OVHcloud wants to extend these solutions in the near future. Additional services like object storage and Managed Rancher Service for multi-cloud Kubernetes administration are on the horizon.

The introduction of these Local Zones would demonstrate OVHcloud’s commitment to security and compliance in addition to its innovative attitude. With further endorsements in cloud services security (ISO/IEC 27017) and personal data protection (ISO/IEC 27018), both new cloud zones have attained ISO/IEC 27001 certification. When deploying services inside the OVHcloud environment, clients can be assured of the highest security standards thanks to these certifications.

“We are incredibly proud to announce today the opening of the first two OVHcloud Local Zones,” said Henrik Hasenkamp, CEO at gridscale. “We’ve been able to integrate and deploy gridscale’s technology just five months after joining the OVHcloud family, offering customers new options to consume OVHcloud Public Cloud, with added performance and data residency. This is just the beginning of an ambitious roadmap targeting a total of 150 Local Zones by 2026. We just can’t wait!”
