Nokia, in collaboration with Islalink, has achieved a significant breakthrough in optical know-how by efficiently testing its sixth-generation Photonic Service Engines (PSE-6s) throughout a 330km undersea cable connecting Crotone, Italy, with Preveza, Greece. This area check, performed on the IONIAN cable system, set a brand new capacity-reach document for 800Gbps transmission, showcasing the superior capabilities of Nokia’s PSE-6s know-how.

The IONIAN community, launched by Islalink, is a high-capacity subsea infrastructure designed to offer dependable and future-proof fiber connectivity between Greece and Italy. It integrates a subsea connection and two terrestrial rings for redundancy, linking key cities in Greece (Athens and Thessaloniki) and Italy (Milan and Rome) utilizing the C+L band (9.6 THz).

The community additionally achieved 1Tbps transmission on Greece’s terrestrial routes: the northern route, spanning 975km from Preveza via Thessaloniki to Athens, and the southern route, a 452km path from Preveza to Athens.

Nokia’s PSE-6s know-how wouldn’t solely enhance community efficiency but additionally improve sustainability by decreasing community energy consumption per bit by 60%. This innovation helps high-demand information center-to-data middle communications and positions Islalink to serve international tech leaders requiring high-speed, power-efficient connectivity.

Supporting Excessive-Velocity Digital Companies

Esther Garcés, CEO of Islalink, emphasised the strategic significance of the achievement. “This profitable trial demonstrates that the IONIAN community, powered by Nokia’s PSE-6s, is able to assist the following technology of high-speed digital companies,” she stated. “Unprecedented capability, reliability, and effectivity will profit our shoppers, solidifying Islalink’s place as a key participant within the international fiber market.”

Matthieu Bourguignon, Senior Vice President and Head of Europe for Nokia’s Community Infrastructure enterprise, highlighted the importance of the milestone. “This capacity-reach document for unrepeated transmission is a significant step ahead in optical know-how,” he stated. “Nokia’s PSE-6s allow high-speed, power-efficient communication for undersea cables and different lengthy, unrepeated traces. This functionality permits Islalink to ship cutting-edge companies to its shoppers throughout Italy, Greece, and Spain, unlocking new alternatives.”
