Mine-based data centre unveiled in Italian Alps

Europe’s first information centre constructed inside an energetic mine, Intacture, has been formally launched within the Val di Non area, 40 km north of Trento within the Alps.

Developed inside a dolomite mine operated by sustainable building specialist Tassullo, Intacture is designed to function a cutting-edge digital infrastructure hub, offering a platform for analysis and growth in areas together with life sciences, AI, vitality transition, and cybersecurity.

The challenge represents an funding of €50.2 million, funded by €18.4 million from the Nationwide Restoration and Resilience Plan (NRRP) and €31.8 million from non-public sources. The challenge is being led by Trentino DataMine, a public-private partnership involving the College of Trento and a number of other corporations chosen via a public tender, together with Covi Costruzioni, Dedagroup, GPI Group, and ISA-Istituto Atesino di Sviluppo.

Over 80% of Intacture’s construction is positioned underground, reaching depths of as much as 100 metres.
