iomart to power first UK data centre with solar energy generated onsite

The photo voltaic panels will generate circa 250,000 kWh of power pa on the information centre, avoiding 96,061kg of CO2 emissions yearly.

The two,800 sqm information centre in Maidenhead is iomart’s largest web site throughout its total UK property, which includes 13 information centres. It’s additionally the cloud internet hosting supplier’s predominant self managed infrastructure facility, powering greater than 12,000 servers.

This funding is a part of iomart’s wider long-term sustainability technique, which has seen the cloud internet hosting supplier energy all its information centres with 100% renewable power coming from sources together with wind, hydro and photo voltaic.

The enterprise additionally partnered with Katrick Applied sciences in 2021 to pilot a world-first warmth cooling system, which aimed to show iomart’s Glasgow information centre waste warmth into energy to drive its servers’ important cooling system.

David Gammie, CTO at iomart, stated: “We’ve a big portfolio of knowledge centres throughout the UK and ensuring they’re as sustainable as doable is considered one of our largest focuses at iomart.

“We’ve already dedicated to powering all our information centres with 100% renewable power. This set up at Maidenhead takes that dedication one step additional – producing our personal power onsite, and as well as the potential to export power again into the grid community sooner or later.
