IBM program targets mainframe skills shortage

Whereas IBM has continued to evolve the mainframe to remain related in an AI and cloud computing world, IT organizations have continued to battle with a shrinking pool of expert employees who know methods to maintain Large Iron platforms buzzing.

Over time, IBM and its enterprise companions have addressed the mainframe workforce scarcity with training and coaching packages focused at areas similar to COBOL programming. IBM’s new efforts are an extension of these packages.

One new effort is the Mainframe Expertise Council, which is aimed toward creating a talented, numerous, sustainable workforce for the mainframe platform, in keeping with IBM. The Council options IBM shoppers and companions, academia, person teams, non-profits, and open communities working collectively to supply and implement mainframe expertise improvement packages. Preliminary Council members embrace Tutorial Mainframe Consortium, Albany State College, Broadcom, DNB Financial institution, HOGENT, M&T Financial institution, Northern Illinois College, SHARE, and 21CS.

IBM says the council will provide working teams targeted on profession consciousness, competency frameworks, studying paths, {and professional} improvement, with targets that embrace:

  • Sharing concepts and practices to boost skilled improvement.
  • Sharing training, coaching instruments, and associated assets to optimize general mainframe profession expertise for professionals and leaders.
  • Growing mainframe employer adoption of confirmed talent initiatives and practices.

A second new effort is the IBM Z Mainframe Skills Depot. Potential professionals can select from specialised mainframe-training tracks tailor-made to roles similar to mainframe system administrator, mainframe utility developer, and modernization architect. Greater than a thousand of hours of self-paced, no-charge, hands-on studying is accessible, and members can earn industry-recognized digital badges, IBM acknowledged.

Present mainframe expertise initiatives from IBM embrace the IBM Z Global Skills Accelerator and Apprenticeship program, which has enabled 83 world employers to talent up greater than 440 mainframe system directors and utility builders throughout 13 nations. As well as, the IBM Z Student Ambassador program supplies management alternatives for college students and helps mainframe pupil golf equipment on campuses at greater than 95 universities worldwide, in keeping with IBM.
