GlobalFoundries acquires MIPS to bolster RISC-V edge and AI compute portfolio

Semiconductor producer GlobalFoundries (GF) introduced its acquisition of MIPS, a number one AI and processor IP provider, to boost its AI and compute capabilities.

The acquisition will broaden GF’s portfolio with superior RISC-V processor IP and software program instruments for purposes in autonomous mobility, industrial automation, knowledge facilities, and clever edge.

MIPS not too long ago launched the Atlas portfolio, that includes compute cores for real-time and AI edge processing, and Atlas Explorer, a digital platform for design optimization.

GF goals to leverage MIPS’ experience to supply extra versatile options and enhance effectivity and efficiency throughout numerous industries.

“MIPS brings a powerful heritage of delivering environment friendly, scalable compute IP tailor-made for performance-critical purposes, which strategically aligns with the evolving calls for of AI platforms throughout numerous markets,” says Niels Anderskouv, president and chief working officer at GlobalFoundries. “By this acquisition, we are going to broaden our capabilities to supply clients extra versatile options, paired with our differentiated course of applied sciences and world-class manufacturing to assist them construct best-in-class merchandise. This acquisition might be a strong step ahead to push the boundaries of effectivity and efficiency throughout a broad vary of purposes in automotive, industrial and knowledge heart infrastructure.”

MIPS will proceed to function as a standalone enterprise inside GF post-acquisition, sustaining its deal with autonomous platforms and bodily AI. The acquisition is anticipated to shut within the second half of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.
