The Federal Communications Fee (FCC) has adopted new guidelines to help the growth of subsea cables whereas addressing potential safety threats from international international locations, together with China.

Subsea cables ship practically 99% of world Web visitors and are vital to supporting development in AI, amongst different applied sciences, said the FCC in a statement (PDF). The brand new guidelines will speed up the method of constructing cables by simplifying the cable licensing course of and offering extra certainty to buyers, the division added. As well as, the principles goal to guard in opposition to cybersecurity and bodily threats from international entities.

“We now have seen submarine cable infrastructure threatened in recent times by international adversaries, like China,” FCC Chairman Brendan Carr stated in a statement. “We’re subsequently taking motion right here to protect our submarine cables in opposition to international adversary possession, and entry in addition to cyber and bodily threats.”
