Ericsson and the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur) have announced a ‘long-term co-operation’ across edge compute, AI, and radio, to help develop technology towards 6G research.

The two organisations participated at a symposium on radio and network research at GS Sanyal School of Telecommunications (GSSST) to discuss developments and advancements for the future of networks and communication.

Two primary initiatives were finalised at the session. The first was a project exploring resource optimisation, dynamic observability, and sustainable distributed and edge computing technologies. The second revolved around AI technologies for joint communication and sensing (JCAS), a potentially important tool for 6G networks as higher frequencies of spectrum are allocated.

Ericsson also presented its vision of 6G at the symposium. The company ‘aims to blend the physical and digital worlds enabling us to improve the quality of life by incorporating widespread sensor-based communications between humans and machines through digital twins’, in its own words.

“This collaboration strengthens our R&D commitments in India and is pivotal to radio, compute and AI research,” said Dr Magnus Frodigh, head of Ericsson Research. “We are excited to partner with IIT Kharagpur and look forward to collaborative research in fundamental areas as well as translational research for our future network platforms.”

In September, Ericsson outlined six key points for architecting future 6G systems. The company stressed the importance of a single 6G architecture and migration track to avoid unnecessary complexity, and called upon the industry to align on key multi-vendor interfaces.
