AI-Powered Ransomware Has Arrived With ‘PromptLock’

It was most likely inevitable – analysts have noticed the primary identified ransomware pressure powered by synthetic intelligence. 

ESET malware researchers Anton Cherepanov and Peter Strycek found the rising pressure, which they’ve named “PromptLock.”

Though it has not but been noticed in lively cyber-attacks, the researchers stated the PromptLock ransomware seems to be below improvement and practically able to be unleashed onto the risk panorama. 

Whereas risk actors have used generative AI instruments to develop malware, PromptLock seems to be the primary case of ransomware that makes use of an AI mannequin as its engine. In a post on LinkedIn, Cherepanov reported that PromptLock leverages the gpt-oss:20b mannequin from OpenAI regionally utilizing the Ollama API to have the ability to create new scripts on the fly and in actual time.
