Microsoft will possible design extra chips past the AI and cloud fashions, added Glenn O’Donnell, vice chairman and analysis director at Forrester. “That is solely the start, as it would want extra chips to serve different functions in its cloud operations in addition to processing AI on the edge and in PCs,” he mentioned.

O’Donnell agreed that the announcement had little to do with Nvidia. The Intel deal is about manufacturing chips, and Nvidia isn’t a chip producer, he famous. “This doesn’t come on the expense of Nvidia,” he added. “They’re completely different relationships.”

Microsoft will proceed to make use of Nvidia GPUs along with its personal chips, O’Donnell added. “Microsoft’s AI ambitions erode a little bit of Nvidia’s dominance in powering AI, however Nvidia will stay the juggernaut in AI.”

Intel’s flurry of chip bulletins this week represents a second try for the corporate to construct a foundry ecosystem that helps exterior prospects, Demler mentioned. Intel had introduced an inner foundry mannequin, for each exterior prospects and its inner product strains, in October 2022.

The corporate’s new efforts to work with Arm, Cadence Design Methods, and different corporations is a “good signal” for future success, Demler added.

Intel has turned to creating chips for exterior prospects in an effort to rebuild its market share in a aggressive trade dominated by TSMC and Samsung. Intel, as soon as the world’s largest chipmaker, started dropping market share within the late 2010s as a result of manufacturing missteps, competitors from Arm, Nvidia and different chip designers, and declining PC gross sales.
